Comments on some one else presentation

All the presentation was geat. I enjoy all of them. Among them I like Anselmo Bailo.'s presentation. His presntation was great and infromative. Being a business student it is important to know how we can make more money with small investment. Anselmo gives very good examples of how businesss make money in recent decades. New media helps business to save money in advertisement and make more money by attractng more customers. Nowadays business can do free advertisement by using new media technologies like blogs, social networking sites etc. The cost for old media(T.V, Newspapers, Magazines etc) advertisement are double than the cost of doing advertisement in New media. Threfore it's great to know how we can use New Media for business progress.

My Wiki class So Far

I am really excited to work on wiki. I contribute some important information about Social Networkinng and Privacy Section. I really enjoy doing research and editing in wiki. Beside that most interesting thing is that we can help each other to add information which is very important for collaboration. I have edited few section in our wiki. For example, Social Networking and Privacy, Social Networking and business, Virtual world, Social Networking and Economics etc. It was very good experience to work on wiki.There is saying , " Sharing is caring" and I think wiki does that because we have to share information an also have to care about other contributors. I think this was great class and I learned a lot.

"Social networking and Loss of privacy"
Individuals are increasingly using social networking sites to keep in touch with friends, family,to find jobs and enchance their carrier.According to the online survey about Facebook users, they reported that in average, people spend about 38.86 minutes each day and have friends more than 25 to 1000. Sometimes information gleaned from such sites are useful to find thieves too. However informations shared in social networks have negative conquiences. Providing name ,date of birth and list of friends users are revealing more than enough.
Most of the social networking sites have been used in assessing employment candidancy and that student have been suspended or criminally charged on basis of information posted in face book. Beside that personal information shared in social networking sites when combined together with new technologies for gathering and compiling data can create a finger print of behaviors. Those personal information provides opportunities not only for legimate business purpose but also for wicked aim of identity thieves.
Privacy preferences project (p3p) developed by World Wide Web Consortium(W3C), provides a simple automated way for users to control who has access to their personal information on the web sites they visites. P3P provides a standarized frame wokr of privacy relate dissues, covering all the aspect of a web sites or orgination's online privacy polices. But, P3P can not protect the privacy of users in cuntries or juridictions with insuficient data privacy laws.

Privacy & Confidentiality

In present time, Privacy and confidentiality are big issues of new media. We should be very careful when we use new media.Before people didn't realize that there could be identity theft via new media. Facebook, Myspace etc has big issue of privacy now.People without knowing about identity theft, they give their real name ,address, phone number as well as date of birth.For people who are engage in stealling other inormation this type of inormaton are really useful for them, which is risky for us as we loss our privacy.They could sale our information to other buinesses for their own profits.
Besides that when we post our personal photos online in social networks or other form of new media, all people in the world can view our photo which is not private and confidential. We are lossing our privacy without knowing it. People can also know our friend circle through social networks.
Some how, there is way to keep track of this privacy and confidentiality problem. When we create our profile we should be very careful and smart. Do not give your real name and address and click on the options where it say friends only can view your profile. If we do that, it will help a little bit to keep our privacy within friends only. But we cann't gurantee that facebook or other social network sites are is going to keep our profile safe from stealling and selling.

Advice to Baruch College

So far, Baruch has been using the effective new media for providing information to students and faculty. Baruch has been able to provide instant information through e-mails, facebook, twitter etc. These are social networks and are some examples of new media.
I think Baruch is far more ahead of using new media. I am taking new media classe therefore I know more bout new medai than ever.So,I think Baruch need to do some more advertise or give some more information about new media to attract other students who might be interested to take this class. This is actually very interesting class. I was able to use Baruch wiki and explore trough it.

So far everything is fine but if they allow student to use new media to sell and buy books and other products would be great. This will save student's money and time. I think selling online to our fellows is better that selling our books in bookstore. This will also makes our college clean as students will stop posting on wall. Beside that I think Baruch should allow students to write review about the classes they already took by using new media. This might help other students.They have been using blackboard but I think they should satrt using wiki for collaboration

My New Media Class- So Far

Blogs,e-magazine,pandora,mashups,podcast,voip,video on you tube,flicker, virtual world etc are some example of new media which was inspired by old media with the combination of internet. Without internet it is impossiblre to create these new media. Internet has palyed fundamental role for the invention of new media. Only in the presence of internet we will be able to use the new media and take advantages.
Now a days people are using blogs to release their new articles instead of same old paper based news.For example news reporter don't have to wait till next morning to release their news articles in newspaper. In the same time public also able to read the blogs as soon as they are posted. In one of the reading I find it most interesting that now we have facinating online video culture. DIV tools fro shooting ,editing and broadcasting videos are not just changing who uses the medium . They are changing how we use it. we are developing a new language of video-forms that let us say different things and may be think different ways.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

The whole world is computerized. So it is more efficient to create something virtually rather than making real product to make better decisions in business, which reduce cost of doing business. Beside that Virtual world is also beneficial to the employeer to train his/her emplyoees for better performance in their business. For instance employees working in sales department can logon to virtual world and can interact with virtual customers like he/she does in reality but not very confident about themselves.This will help both employee and employeer to perform best in their business.
Virtual world is one of the tools that allows people in the socity to communicate and to socialize.Some people are shy or don't want to talk in fornt of mass, they can logon to virtual world and can learn or practice to communicate and socialize.They can go for dates, movies etc in the virtual world which they never did or thought about.
Everything has positive and negative impact on people. Likewise Virtual world is also one of the tool for social network which allow people to communicate in the virtual world. We can create our avatar in second life and can do or go whereever we want through the virtual world.For example I live in Nepal, if I want to go to Downtown Manhattan club I can go threre just by logging in to the virtual world and can see the virtual envronment just like real environment. This good in one way that I can enjoy few minutes but when I come back to reality it might makes me sad or depressedthat it's not the reality. Beside that in Virtual world people might use that technology to Launder money. Threre is a risk of criminals too.
So I think whatever the technology is, people must find the best way to use it. If we use for negative purposes that might be risky but if we use these technology effectively then it will be very beneficail for everybody.

Twitter Vs Blackboard.

Both Twitter and Blackboard are really interesting tools to discuss, brain storming, recents updates etc. Both are very useful for professors and students to keep in track with their subject matters. Both are similar in sense that both help us to keep track on recent happenings.
I like Blackboard more better because we can write and discuess more than twitter. Twitter allow us to write only 140 characters at one twits,which I think is to little to tell your openion to your friends or professors. But good thing about Twitter is that we can search anything we want and can ask for other's openions. Many people will respond to us very quickly.

Social Networking

In one hand social networking is very useful in todays world.Specially it is useful a company to hire it's employees as they can see their profile in the social network. They can build collaboration within the employees of different department or different geographical regions for better performances and better result. Company can produce a virtual product and ask for feedback from peopel to make better decision. Social network reduces the cost of doing business. Beside that Social network is also useful for every individual as it help us to keep in touch with our friends, family and relatives. We can see their photos and chat whenever we want and know the latest happing in their life. Social network has made our life easy.It seems like the world is very small because of social network.
In other hand we can't trust these Social network. There is a risk of identity theft as we create the account and give our real name and date of birth. Some people might do data minning through our account and could steal our identity.

Actually all the social networks have same goals, that is to connect you to your friends, family and relatives through out the world. It's main aim is to get connected with people, share your photos etc.Some of the social networksites are Facebook,Hi5,Friendater and MySpace.
Among them I like Hi5 and Facebook the most. I have been using these sites for long time. I really like about Hi5 is that we can choose different skin to skin our profile. Beside, that I like it most because in my country most of my friends have account in Hi5 rather than facebook or other sites. I like Facebook because I can chat with my mutual friends whenever I log in. In Facebook I have friends who live in United States and Australia and Europe.I also creat an account in friendster and myspace but I think those are little bit inconvenience for me because I can't have connection with most of my friends.

Blogs Vs Wiki

As we know that both of them fall under the category of new media. They are all most same but slightly different by features. The following are some reasons why they are little different.

Wiki: Wiki is used by so many peopl for information. We can edit wiki but with the publisher's permission only. For example we can edit if it's belong to our company or if it is our group. Wiki gives information to thousands of millions of people whoever are looking for information through wiki.It is really useful when we are doing group project and need to transfer information to large number of group members.

But,in case of Blog it is just like a social network.We use to provide information to our friends or to those who are involved in blogging. We can't edit other's page but we can comment on their's work. Beside that It is really good to provide information to our own group of friends faster than e-mailing each and every one.

New Media Vs Old Media

Old Media Vs. New Media
Old media was once new media. People used to communicate with the help of telephone, letters etc. Journalists used to write news on newspapers. Television, radio, movie theater were main source of entertainment. People mostly used to depend on radio, television, newspaper for information.
But New Media is the transformation of the existing media. Journalists start using blogs to post their news instead of newspaper. People start watching movie on internet rather going to the theater. They use podcast instead of radio. New media helped individuals to become a manufacturer and distributor.

Social Network In Todays Views (My Term Project)

Social Network has been providing people to get connected through out the world.The proliferation of wireless and mobile devices such as personal digital assistants and mobile phones has created a large demand for mobile software applications such as social network software. In addition, the realization and widespread usage of peer-to-peer (P2P)networking have drastically increased the number of applications utilizing these technologies. The convergence of mobile and P2P networking have generated increasing interest in the mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) community. In this paper, we describe the design and development of a mobile social software (MoSoSo) based on a P2P network architecture using Juxtapose (JXTA) and Juxtapose for Java MicroEdition (JXME). The MoSoSo application allows users to discover, communicate and share resources with one another. We present three facets of designing the MoSoSo: object-oriented software design, network infrastructure design, and user-interface design. The software has been fully implemented and tested on a variety of mobile devices for use in a campus setting. By studying the design and implementation of the MoSoSo, we hope to benefit the entire mobile application development community by providing common models and insights into developing MP2P software. Beside that Social Network is also used to hire employees in the workplace.

New Media

The technology like blogs,wiki,wikipedia etc are part of new media. These new media have been giving people some sort of freedom to publish their own news. It is personal but all people can view our posting and get information and give feedback.
I think internet is really important for the new media because all the works are done through internet. New media is replacing old media because old media people couldn't publish news or any artical. Old media was not personal. But New media gave chance to people to post any news and artical they want which is personal. Some of the old media are books, journalism,radio etc. Some of the new media are e-books, blogs,podcasts etc.
